Seminar
Since the first seminar in 2007, the participants have chosen several topics for discussion, essential to both of the Laboratory’s projects: migration processes and inequality in education. Aspects of these topics such as the USA preschool educational system, the correlation between the quality of preschool child care and children’s cognitive development, the dependence of language assimilation at the preschool stage on progress in studies, migrant children’s chances of getting a preschool education, availability barriers and others have all been discussed during seminars.
A weekly seminar is held in our Laboratory where undergraduate students (1st -3rd year students) work together with Laboratory research workers. The seminar combines educational and research work: the participants discuss modern research in the field of education and science. Thus, the seminar also gives students professional experience.Seminar participants prepare reports and discuss extracts from modern and classic literature (mostly foreign) on topics connected with major Laboratory work. As a rule, the seminars are held every Thursday. Often guests are invited to speak about their own research work, giving the students the opportunity to gain experience of conducting research work and academic analysis. Moreover, they learn to hold academic discussions and be exposed to various methods of sociological research.
Below is the list of the topics discussed during the 2007-2008 seminars.
